Life Hacks: Learn your Lectures 2x Faster (Literally)

life_hack_watching_podcasts

So you’ve got to watch 15 podcasts but you have a midterm tomorrow. You’ve calculated it, and it’s going to take you 15 hours, even if you don’t procrastinate or fall asleep. And let’s be honest, you’re going to procrastinate. Here’s the secret: Play your lectures at 2x the speed. You’ll be able to hear it all; your brain will adjust, and you can slow down at the important parts. But, next time, go to class. That being said, you do need a video player other than iTunes to use this particular feature though. We recommend using a video player called VLC Media. It’s one of the most downloaded video players on cnet.com (a highly popular tech site used by tech geeks) and consistently gets great ratings. Click on the links provided below to download.

If you’re a Windows

If you’re a Mac

1. After you have downloaded the file, open up VLC Media Player.

2. Download and then play your podcast using the player

3. Look to the top left of your screen. There should be a menu with a number of options (File, Edit, View, Playback, Etc).

4. Click playback and adjust the speed of the video there.

If you’re more of a visual learner, here’s a screenshot:

So there you go, here’s your pre-finals hack. Now get to studying.

Life Hack: Unclogging your Drains

Do you have the privilege of having a private bathroom? Maybe you’ve faced a clogged drain. If your drain’s getting clogged or things are going down too slowly, follow these simple steps.

1. Throw a few tablespoons of baking soda down the drain.

2. Pour a cup of vinegar. Wait 10 minutes.

3. Pour a pot of boiling water into the drain

That being said, this won’t fix any major clogging. But, this is a good way to get a bit of gunk outta there.

Life-Hack: Water-Proof Shoes

life_hack_waterproof_shoes

As all of you may know, we are currently in a drought. The key to solving this drought, we’ve devised, is to collect a lot of rainwater. Unfortunately, your shoes are greedy, and they drink our precious water. And darn it, we won’t stand for that any longer when we’re running out. So here’s a tip on how you can prevent shoes of the cloth clan from stealing our precious rainwater (and also you know, avoid walking around in icky wet shoes).

So what’s the solution? Rub beeswax onto them. Yup. That’s it. That’ll incapacitate those foul water molecules from attacking your shoes and keep them nice and dry. Try it out. Help California save water.

Life Hacks: Microwave Faster

So you have two bowls that you want to microwave, but only one fits, and you don’t have enough time to microwave both. What do you do? Stack them on top of each other. Simply place one bowl on the tray and then a dish over it. Proceed to place another bowl on top of that dish. Think of it as a bowl sandwich. The bowl is the bread while the plate is the pbj. Good luck with your midterms this week folks!

Life Hack: Cleaning your Microwave

Is the mess in your microwave making you scared? It’s making us scared too. Here’s an easy way to clean yours!

Step 1: Get a bowl and fill it up with one to two cups of water, and then add one to two tablespoons vinegar.

Step 2: Add a toothpick to the water so that the mixture can properly boil in the microwave. WARNING: Without this step, the liquid could possibly explode. You don’t want this, do you? Now, go get that toothpick. Go on. We’ll wait.

Step 3: Put the bowl in the microwave and close the door. Microwave for 5 minutes and after the timer goes off, keep the door closed for another minute so the steam can do its magic.

Step 4: Open the door and CAREFULLY take out the bowl of water and vinegar. NOTE: The bowl will be hot.

Step 5: If you have a turntable tray, remove it and wash it in the sink. Once the turntable is removed, wipe down the rest of the microwave with a sponge dipped in the liquid. The gross bits stuck to the microwave should come off easily!

And that’s it! A super simple way to clean your microwave and make the world a better place. Now, clean your microwave.

Step 1: Pick up a few binder clips (however many you need; correspond the amount properly with how many cables you have).

Step 2: Clip the clips against some sort of stand (the edge of a table is a great spot), and then link your cables through the holes of the clips.

And voila! There you have it. Your room is now cleaner. By the way, if these written instructions don’t explain things well enough for you, take a look at a video ResTV made about this lifehack. Happy Spring Cleaning!
